For me, wildlife photography has never been just about finding an animal and making a photograph. It is about experiencing it in the place where it belongs.
There is something very different about seeing a lion in the vast plains of the Masai Mara, where it moves through the grasslands as it has for generations. Here, the landscape is not simply a backdrop. It is part of the story. The lion is at home, and for a brief moment, I get to witness that world as it really is.
That is what draws me to wild places.
I want to experience the places that shape the animals I photograph. The open plains, wetlands, forests and deserts. The changing light, the heat, the rain and the sounds that surround every encounter. I might travel somewhere with a particular animal in mind, but it is the combination of the animal and its environment that makes the experience memorable.
Photography has given me a reason to slow down and observe. To wait for an animal to reveal something of its character, but also to look beyond it and to see how it fits into the landscape around it. A herd of elephants crossing an open plain feels different from elephants moving through dense woodland. A leopard disappearing into tall grass tells a different story from one resting high in a tree.
The environment matters.
Sometimes the photograph I come home with is a close portrait. Sometimes it is a small animal within an grand landscape. Both can be equally meaningful, because both remind me of the place where the encounter happened.
And that is what I love about travelling to wild places. I am not simply looking for wildlife. I am looking for the places where wildlife can still live on its own terms, where a lion can be king of the plains, elephants can move freely across vast landscapes, and every encounter feels shaped by the environment around it.
The photograph captures a moment. The place gives that moment meaning.”
Wildlife makes me want to see the places where it belongs.
