About me

I’m Joost Smit, a nature photographer with a deep love for the outdoors and the wildlife that calls it home. My journey into photography began during a safari in Africa, where I captured my first wildlife images. Being surrounded by such incredible landscapes and animals sparked a lasting fascination with photographing the natural world.

Since that first trip, I’ve been fortunate to return to Africa many times — visiting Zambia, Botswana, Malawi, and Kenya. Each journey has offered something new: from the thunder of wildebeest on the move to the quiet grace of a leopard slipping through the grass. I try to capture not just what I see, but the feeling of being there in that moment.

My travels have also taken me further afield, including to the rainforests of Costa Rica and to Brazil’s Pantanal, where I photographed jaguars and an astonishing variety of birdlife. Each destination brings its own rhythm and stories, and I’m always inspired by the diversity and resilience of nature.

Closer to home, I find inspiration in the Dutch wetlands near where I live. They’re peaceful, full of character, and a perfect place to observe birds and their behaviors. I also enjoy macro photography, which lets me explore the smaller details of nature — the textures, colors, and patterns that often go unnoticed.

Outside of photography, I work as a Chemical Engineer, developing more sustainable processes that help reduce the environmental impact of industry. It’s a field that connects strongly with my photography — both are about curiosity, creativity, and finding ways to protect the natural world.

Through my images, I hope to share a sense of wonder and respect for the planet we all share. If my photos can encourage someone to slow down, look closer, or appreciate nature a little more, then I’ve achieved what I set out to do.

Thank you for visiting — I hope you enjoy exploring my gallery and the stories behind each image.
